Into the Volcano
The Lions are back in Mexico for the second leg of its Concacaf Champions Cup series with Tigres UANL, set to be played at Estadio Universitario, also known as El Volcán, one of the most famed venues in Mexico and one of the best atmospheres in Concacaf. The Lions know well what awaits them at El Volcán, playing in the famed stadium in last year’s Concacaf Champions League in a scoreless draw against Tigres. El Volcán has not witnessed a Tigres defeat since April 8 of last year.

It took Orlando City forward Duncan McGuire just 13 seconds into the club’s match against Minnesota to score his first goal of the 2024 campaign. At 13 seconds, his strike set a new Club record for the fastest goal scored all-time by any Lion, breaking the previous record set by former forward Tesho Akindele, who scored at :31 on May 1, 2021, against FC Cincinnati. The team has scored three goals in the opening minute in its 10 MLS seasons, with Akindele having the third. McGuire’s first goal on the night also tied Colorado Rapid’s Deshorn Brown (Oct. 5, 2013) for the fifth-fastest goal in MLS history.
A Brace Away
Forward and Designated Player Facundo Torres is just two goals away from tying former Orlando City captain Nani for the second-most goals in Club history at 31 across all competitions. The Montevideo native would then trail only former Lion Cyle Larin with 44 tallies for the most all-time with the Club.
Away Goals – The Scenarios
The Lions enter Tuesday’s second leg matchup with Tigres UANL level on aggregate, following a scoreless draw at INTER&Co Stadium in the first leg. The scenario for the second leg sets up similar to last year’s matchup against the Liga MX side, with City holding the away goals advantage entering the second leg of the series this year. A scoreless draw is Tuesday’s only scenario in which the sides will head to extra time and a penalty-kick shootout, if necessary, otherwise any win or form of scored draw will send the Lions through to the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals to face the winner of Columbus Crew vs. Houston Dynamo FC.

Orlando City has faced a daunting start to its 2024 campaign, facing a slate of matches right off the bat in which the Club was expected to be playing a game every three days on average. That expectation has held true with Tuesday’s match against Tigres serving as the Lions’ seventh match in 21 days to kick off 2024. By the time City faces Atlanta United this Sunday, it will have played eight games in 26 days to start the Club’s 2024 season.
