Following a come-from-behind effort in Minnesota, here are five storylines to watch on Saturday as Orlando City looks to make it back-to-back wins against D.C. United at Exploria Stadium:
Who Can? Dun-Can
Orlando City forward Duncan McGuire notched his second goal of his professional career over the weekend, netting the game-winner for the Lions in Minnesota for the first deciding finish of his City career.
Following his performance, the 2023 MLS SuperDraft selection was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday Bench, his first honors in the league since being selected sixth overall by the Lions back in December out of Creighton.
McGuire’s first professional goal came on March 11, when the side traveled to face this weekend’s opposition in D.C. United in a fixture that resulted in a 1-1 draw at Audi Field.
Twice as Nice
Forward Iván Angulo netted the second goal of his City career over the weekend, both of which have come in this calendar year through the side’s last three contests.
In addition to his finish on Saturday, it was Angulo’s strike that hit off the crossbar before falling to Duncan McGuire for the eventual game-winner for the Lions at Allianz Field.
Since being acquired midway through last season, Angulo has appeared in 20 matches in all competitions for the Lions, with three assists to add to his pair of finishes.
On the Board
Forward Gastón González tallied his second start of the campaign over the weekend, now having appeared in each of the Lions’ last eight matches across all competitions.
The weekend saw the 21-year-old Argentine tally his first goal contribution for the Club, earning the assist on Iván Angulo’s finish in the 58th minute.
Extending the Record
Lions captain Mauricio Pereyra found himself involved in the attack once more over the weekend, notching his third assist in as many contests to lead City in that category on the year.
Pereyra serves as the Club’s all-time assist leader, now with 36 as a Lion in MLS action and 38 in total in all competitions.
Back in the Mix
Defender Antonio Carlos recorded his first start of the 2023 campaign this past Saturday, going the full 90 for Oscar Pareja’s side in the match. After being sidelined to start the season due to injury, the Brazilian center back previously appeared off the bench for the Lions on the road at Philadelphia Union to help secure a 2-1 victory on March 25, with Saturday serving as his first start since the end of the 2022 campaign.
