Here are five storylines to watch on Saturday, when Orlando City SC host Minnesota United at INTER&Co Stadium:
Honoring Thy Legacy
Orlando City SC is set to wear its Legacy Kit, presented by Orlando Health, this Saturday for the first time at INTER&Co Stadium when the Lions take on Minnesota United FC. The Club’s 2024-25 Community Kit celebrates and honors the organization’s history – from the early days as a member of USL Pro to, now, amid its historic 10th season in Major League Soccer. The Club worked with both MLS and adidas to modernize the iconic Three Lions crest that was the team’s logo from 2011-14, emblazoned with metallic gold filigree and a bolder look on the trifecta of lions.
Flashback
The last time the Lions and the Loons faced each other in MLS regular season play, the two teams played to a three-goal thriller that saw Orlando City take a late comeback win at Allianz Field on April 15 of last year. Minnesota took the lead in the 58th minute off of Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s strike, which Iván Angulo equalized just eight minutes later. Then rookie forward Duncan McGuire locked things up for the Lions, scoring the winner against Minnesota in the 88th minute of the match.
A Brace Away
Forward and Designated Player Facundo Torres is just two goals away from tying former Orlando City captain Nani for the second-most goals in Club history at 31 across all competitions. The Montevideo native would then trail only former Lion Cyle Larin with 44 tallies for the most all-time with the Club.
Toe to Toe
Orlando City went toe to toe with one of the giants of the continent on Tuesday night, playing Liga MX’s Tigres UANL to a scoreless draw at INTER&Co Stadium. Keeping Tigres off the board in the match sets the Lions up well for the return leg in Monterrey, with away goals still serving as the first aggregate tiebreaker in Concacaf Champions Cup all the way until the final. Through three matches against Tigres both sides have played to three draws.
Into the Volcano
Following Saturday’s home match against Minnesota United, Orlando City will fly to Monterrey, Mexico for the second leg of its Concacaf Champions Cup series with Tigres UANL, set to be played at Estadio Universitario, also known as El Volcán. The Lions know well what awaits them at El Volcán, playing in the famed venue in last year’s Concacaf Champions League in a scoreless draw against Tigres.
Milestone Tracker:
- Facundo Torres is two goals away from tying Nani (31) for second all-time in Orlando City history
- Pedro Gallese’s next appearance will be his 126th across all competitions for City, tying him with former Lions Chris Mueller for fourth all-time
- Kyle Smith is four appearances away from 150 all-time for the Lions
