HARRISBURG, Pa. (April 18, 2017) – In the second match of a three-game road trip, Orlando City B (1-3-2, 5 points) earned a point with a stoppage-time goal from Zach Carroll to draw the Harrisburg City Islanders (2-1-1, 7 points) 1-1 Tuesday evening at FNB Field. It was Carroll’s first professional goal.
“We knew coming into tonight it wasn’t going to be an easy game. Harrisburg posed challenges and we had to try to have a certain amount of quality if we were going to come here and get anything,” OCB Head Coach Anthony Pulis said. “The effort level, the commitment level, the intensity and tempo of the guys, not only in possession but out of possession was fantastic. I thought a point was the least we deserved.”
The match saw First Teamers Earl Edwards, Jr., PC, Léo Pereira, Hadji Barry, Tony Rocha, Richie Laryea, Moussa Sane and Pierre Da Silva earn spots in the starting XI. Joining them were Carroll, Paul Clowes and Youmeni Jules, followed by second-half substitutes Jordan Schweitzer, Austin Martz and Albert Dikwa.
Both teams got off to slow starts but gradually picked up the intensity as the game continued. Laryea and Barry combined for a strong opportunity early on, but Barry’s shot went wide. Da Silva and PC showed good chemistry up the left wing and Da Silva had several good crosses, but to no avail.
The Lions came out strong in the second half and nearly found the opening goal in the 57th minute but Laryea’s attempt, which came after a nice combination play with Barry and Sane, rolled on top of but not over the goalline and Harrisburg goalkeeper Brandon Miller reached behind him to pull it back. Both teams exhibited strong defensive form the remainder of the half and it was only through an attempt from the penalty spot in the 80th minute that the Islanders were able to beat Edwards.
But in true Orlando City fashion, OCB did not give up and finally found the equalizer at the stroke of full time. Laryea was dragged down on the edge of the box and Da Silva drove a low free kick into traffic and right at Carroll, who finished it into the roof of the net in the third minute of stoppage time. It was Da Silva’s team-leading fourth assist of the season.
Orlando City heads back to Pennsylvania on Sunday, April 23 to face Bethlehem Steel FC at 4 p.m. ET. The Lions return to Orlando City Stadium on Thursday, April 27, when they host Saint Louis FC at 7:30 p.m. ET.
