CHESTER, Pa. (July 18, 2018) – Orlando City SC lost 1-0 to the Philadelphia Union in the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday at Talen Energy Stadium.
“Bitterly disappointed to be honest,” Lions head coach James O’Connor said. “We expected a lot more given the performance level at the weekend against Toronto, I thought that was really encouraging. When we look at tonight, I don’t think we really got into the game. Second half we had phases of pressure but not enough. First half we didn’t have anywhere near enough energy. Really disappointed to go out of the Cup competition like that.”
Goalkeeper Earl Edwards, Jr. got his third Open Cup start of the year. Shane O’Neill, who was signed on June 22, made his Club debut alongside Mohamed El-Munir, Amro Tarek and Donny Toia on the back line. Sacha Kljestan, who assisted on all four of City’s Open Cup goals in 2018, wore the captain’s armband with Uri Rosell, Will Johnson, Chris Mueller and Josué Colmán in the midfield. Dom Dwyer started up top.
The Union got off to a quick start when Alejandro Bedoya rifled home a rebound in the fourth minute. Edwards saved the original shot from Fafa Picault from close range.
Edwards, who earned his first career MLS victory on Saturday, made eight saves to keep City within striking distance.
Dillon Powers came on for Chris Mueller at halftime. Stéfano Pinho replaced Colmán in the 63rd and Cam Lindley came on for Rosell in the 70th.
City returns to MLS play when it visits Columbus Crew SC on Saturday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Lions return to Orlando City Stadium at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 26, to host New York City FC.
