MELBOURNE, Fla. (June 5, 2016) – In the last of six consecutive home games, Orlando City B (4-6-2, 14 points) fell to first-place Louisville City FC (8-1-3, 27 points) by a final score of 4-3. Hadji Barry registered a goal and assist while Harrison Heath netted his first professional goal in the match.
“Once we settled down and got into a rhythm, I thought we played some good stuff. Fair credit to [Louisville], they’re a good side. They’re at the top of the division for a reason. It’s a good learning [experience] for the younger players,” OCB Head Coach Anthony Pulis said. “I’m pleased for the guys that scored. Hadji [Barry] worked his socks off tonight. It’s great for them from an individual point of view.”
The Lions started out with good possession as the teams exchanged opportunities. Louisville started the scoring in the 13th minute, however, when Chandler Hoffman tapped in Kyle Smith’s centering feed from the right wing.
OCB responded in the 29th minute when Tony Rocha picked up a loose ball in the attacking third and worked it to Barry on the left wing. The former UCF standout dribbled into the box before drilling a cross into the middle for Heath, who directed it into the back of the net from eight yards out for his first professional goal.
Louisville went down to 10 men in the 39th minute when George Davis IV earned a second yellow card after a challenge on Lewis Neal at midfield.
The Lions took over possession with the man advantage and almost immediately scored. Just moments into the second half, Tyler Turner got in behind the back line before passing across to Richie Laryea in the box. Laryea’s initial shot rang off the crossbar and his second attempt looked as though it went in, but the referee ruled that it was saved off the line.
Barry put the Lions in the lead shortly after, though. In the 49th minute, Pierre Da Silva made a nice run into the box and made a drop pass to Barry for his third goal of the season. It was Da Silva’s second assist in two games.
Louisville head coach James O’Connor made several substitutions in response to Barry’s goal. Andrew Lubahn, who came on in the 56th minute, set up Ben Newnam’s equalizer in the 62nd minute and scored Louisville’s go-ahead goal just two minutes later to put the visitors up 3-2. Shortly after, former Orlando City Lion Aodhan Quinn fired a left-footed free kick into the top corner from 25 yards out in the 69th minute, which proved to be the game winner.
The Lions almost pulled within one with a gorgeous passing display. Michael Cox hauled in a long pass and dribbled across the box before passing to Neal. The captain chipped a ball to Rocha, whose header required a great save from Louisville goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsignh. Johnny Mendoza whipped a cross into the box for Turner in the 87th minute, but Turner’s header went just inches wide of the post.
Cox cut the Louisville lead to one in stoppage time when he ran onto a long ball from Lions goalkeeper Mark Ridgers in the box and fired a shot past Ranjitsignh. It was Cox’s team-leading fourth goal of the season.
OCB goes on the road for the first time in over a month on Saturday, June 11, when it visits the Charleston Battery for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Lions return to Titan Soccer Complex on Sunday, June 19, to host New York Red Bulls II. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. E.T.
