OCB Rallies to Earn Point Against New York Red Bulls II

MELBOURNE, Fla. (June 19, 2016) – In its first home game in two weeks, Orlando City B (5-6-3, 18 points) battled back to earn a 2-2 draw against second-place New York Red Bulls II (8-1-4, 28 points). Honduran defender Devron García scored his first professional goal and countryman Bryan Róchez notched his first assist of the season. The starters from both teams wore #OrlandoUnited t-shirts and a moment of silence was observed before the match in honor of the victims lost during last week’s tragedy in Orlando.

“I’m really pleased at the character, the togetherness and the spirit the guys showed to come from behind and get a point. I thought we had some good individual performances,” OCB Head Coach Anthony Pulis said. “Winning breeds confidence. The run of games that we’ve been on and the good results we’ve had, it gives the boys confidence. On the run of the game, I’ll take a point after being 2-1 down.”

OCB opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Zach Hayden lofted a ball into the box that New York goalkeeper Ryan Meara punched away but right to García, who wired it home for his first goal in purple. It was the Red Bulls’ first goal allowed in five games and just their seventh of the season.

New York responded in the 38th minute when Tim Schmoll tapped home a loose ball in the box after Devon Williams lofted a ball into a crowd on the six-yard box. Red Bulls II scored again just four minutes later when Aaron Long curled another Williams pass just inside the far post off the volley.

Orlando City Designated Player Róchez entered the game in the 86th minute and made an immediate impact. Just one minute after entering, Róchez received a pass, made a nice move and slipped a good ball in for Pierre Da Silva, who fired it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

Goalkeeper Mark Ridgers, who came into the game leading the United Soccer League (USL) with 42 saves, added three to that total in another strong outing. Tony Rocha started the match after playing with Orlando City’s first team in Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup win over the North American Soccer League’s Jacksonville Armada FC. Orlando’s Marius Obekop, who led Red Bulls II with six goals in 2015, came on in the 58th minute in place of Andrew Ribeiro.

The Lions return to action on Sunday, June 26, when they visit FC Montreal for a 3 p.m. kickoff. OCB returns to Titan Soccer Complex to host the Charlotte Independence on Saturday, July 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. E.T.
