ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2024) – Orlando City SC has acquired Slovenian defender David Brekalo from Viking FK of the Norwegian Eliteserien, it was announced today. Brekalo will join the Lions on a guaranteed contract through 2027, with a Club option in 2028, pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and ITC.
“We’re very excited to be able to bring David to Orlando and to have him join us this year,” said Orlando City EVP of Soccer Operations and General Manager Luiz Muzzi. “His defensive intelligence and technical abilities are both something that we feel will bolster our back line and set us up for further success this season.”
A product of NK Bravo’s academy system in Slovenia, the 25-year-old has made 185 appearances since beginning his professional career in 2017, scoring 19 goals and providing two assists as a center back across all club competitions.
The Ljubljana native made his international debut for the Slovenian National Team on March 26, 2022, in an international friendly against Croatia with the match finishing in a 1-1 draw. In total Brekalo has made 11 international appearances at the senior level, scoring his first goal against Kazakhstan almost a year after his debut in UEFA European Qualifiers.
Brekalo has also been a mainstay for Slovenia at the youth national team levels, adding an additional 28 matches of experience across Slovenia’s U-16, U-18, U-19 and U-21 National Teams.
