Pride in the W-League: Round 13

Sydney FC 2, Melbourne Victory 2 (recap / highlights)
Alanna Kennedy, Christine Nairn and Dani Weatherholt will all be seeing postseason action as both Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory secured a spot in the Finals after a 2-2 draw on Sunday. Kennedy opened scoring on the day in the 35th minute, firing home a rebound before paying tribute to countryman Awer Mabil on her celebration. Mabil, a member of Australia’s men’s national team, recently lost his sister in a car accident. The two sides then exchanged goals for the remainder of the match, splitting the points after 90 minutes. Nairn and Weatherholt both featured in all 90 minutes for Victory, who sit at the top of the W-League table.

Brisbane Roar 4, Canberra United 1 (recap / highlights)
Brisbane Roar remained at the top of the table with a three-goal victory over Canberra that was highlighted by a goal from Portland Thorns’ forward Hayley Raso, scoring in her first match since recovering from a broken back. Raso scored in the 18th minute and Brisbane quickly added to its lead after Carson Pickett found Celeste Boureille on a 32nd-minute corner kick. Yuki Nagasato scored Brisbane’s third and Allira Toby added the fourth, setup by a perfectly-placed Chioma Ubogagu pass.

Newcastle Jets 2, Adelaide United 1 (recap / highlights)
Newcastle Jets picked up its fourth win of the season but lost another important piece of the puzzle on Friday when Larissa Crummer suffered a season-ending leg injury. The Jets, who are playing without captain Emily van Egmond for the remainder of the season due to an ankle injury, scored a stoppage-time goal to pick up the victory. Chicago Red Stars player Erin Wright opened the game with a penalty kick goal in the 22nd minute but Fanndis Fridriksdottir leveled things for Adelaide in the 29th minute. Panagiota Petratos stole three points in second-half injury time.

Rachel Hill and Perth Glory put on a clinic this weekend, downing Western Sydney 5-1 on the road. The win brought Glory into playoff position, and also saw Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr become the W-League’s all-time leading goalscorer after Hill found her in the 70th minute, the first of her two goals. Hill wouldn’t be denied in the 84th minute, adding Glory’s fifth goal, while Lexi Moreno and Katie Naughton also scored for Perth. Leena Khamis scored Western Sydney’s lone goal.
