The fifth round of the Westfield W-League took place over the weekend, with all five members of the Orlando Pride taking the field in Australia’s top-flight league. The Pride went unbeaten on the weekend, with their four respective clubs combining for a 3-0-1 record. Alanna Kennedy played her first full match of the season, earning a spot on the Team of the Week for her performance.
Thursday, December 12:
Melbourne City 1, Melbourne Victory 0
The fifth round of the W-League kicked off with the first Melbourne Derby of the season, with Pride midfielder Emily van Egmond and Claire Emslie both featuring in the starting XI for City. Van Egmond was denied from the penalty spot in the 28th minute, but City scored the game-winner late to remain unbeaten on the season thanks to an 89th minute finish from Yukari Kinga. Emslie was subbed off after the halftime break, while van Egmond played the entirety of the match.
Friday, December 13:
Perth Glory 1, Canberra United 1
Pride forward Camila played a full 90 on Friday morning for Canberra United in a 1-1 draw against Perth Glory. Portland Thorns forward Simone Charley opened the scoring for Canberra in the 15th minute of the match, but Perth’s Kim Carroll leveled the game late, finding the back of the net in the 90th minute to force the two sides to split the points from the match.
Saturday, December 14:
Brisbane Roar 3, Adelaide United 2
In a five-goal thriller on Saturday, Pride defender Carson Pickett featured for the entirety of the match for Brisbane. The Roar jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with finishes from Indiah-Paige Riley and Portland Thorns forward Hayley Raso in the fourth and 12 minutes respectively. Adelaide answered, however, with two goals of their own with Mary Fowler and Mallory Weber finding the back of the net in the 25th and 76th minutes. Raso secured a brace in the 83rd minute, scoring the game-winner to give the Roar their second-consecutive victory.
Sunday, December 15:
Sydney FC 2, Newcastle Jets 0
The defending W-League Champions bounced back on the road with a 2-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets. Pride defender Alanna Kennedy logged her first 90 of the campaign with a performance that earned her a spot on the W-League Team of the Week. A brace from Remy Siemsen in the 31st and 50th minutes, respectively, earned Sydney the shutout victory on the afternoon.
