As the MLS season winds down, Orlando City’s last game in Camping World Stadium approaches. While the team is thrilled to move to their new stadium next season, some great memories have been made in Orlando City’s five seasons in Camping World Stadium. Let’s look back at the top five moments in Orlando City’s history with the stadium.
1. #FillTheBowl - Orlando City vs. New York City FC
On March 8th, 2015 Orlando City made their MLS debut against fellow expansion team New York City FC in front of a sellout crowd of 62,510. While they conceded an early goal, Kaká found the back of the net off a free kick in stoppage time and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
2. 2013 USL Championship - Orlando City vs. Charlotte Eagles
Orlando City’s second USL Championship came in the 2013 season with a record breaking 20,000+ in attendance. Orlando City finished second place in the regular season and beat the Charlotte Eagles 7-4 in a thrilling match that would give Orlando City their second title in three years. Dom Dwyer returned for the match from Sporting Kansas City and scored four goals to help City raise the trophy.
3. #FillTheBowlAgain - Orlando City vs. Real Salt Lake
On March 6th, 2016 Orlando City filled the bowl again, playing their 2016 Home Opener against Real Salt Lake. In front of a crowd of 60,147, Cyle Larin and Adrian Winter scored two goals in stoppage time, sending the crowd into hysteria as Orlando City drew 2-2.
4. #OrlandoUnited - Orlando City vs. San Jose Earthquakes
Following the horrific shooting at the Pulse Nightclub on June 12th, 2016, Orlando City honored the victims in its match that weekend against San Jose. Orlando City color-coded the seats to create a rainbow flag that honored the LGBT community. They hung 49 balloons over 49 empty seats to symbolize those lost. First-responders were involved in the pre-game activities, and in the 49th minute of play, both teams stopped and had a moment of silence. The match was a powerful way to honor what was lost and to bring the community together.
5. 2011 USL Championship - Orlando City vs. Harrisburg City Islanders
We looked Orlando's second USL Championship, but their first championship came in their inaugural season in 2011, when they took on the Harrisburg City Islanders. At the end of regular time, it was a 1-1 draw, and at the end of extra time, it was a 2-2 draw. In the end, Orlando City won after a thrilling 3-2 penalty shootout victory, giving Orlando City their first championship as a club.
