Yesterday marked the end of the MLS summer transfer and trade window, which means teams have their rosters mostly set for the rest of the season. While USL and overseas signings are still a possibility, it is likely that this will be the roster that leads these teams through the rest of the season. Here are some of the highlights of trades and signings from around the league.
Orlando City coach Jason Kreis had a little bit of time at the end of the transfer window to bring in some of the players he would like to use to create his ideal team. The biggest among those moves was trading Orlando City veteran Darwin Ceren to the San Jose Earthquakes for attacking midfielder Matias Perez Garcia. Kreis is hoping this will give Orlando City one of the strongest offenses in the game as they look to make a run for the playoffs. Orlando City also signed Mikey Ambrose and Tony Rocha, who have been playing for Orlando City B, to MLS contracts. Pair those moves with the addition of defender Jose Aja earlier in the window and Orlando City added a fair bit of heft to their roster.
Some of the biggest changes took place in Philadelphia, as the Union look to strengthen their roster before the playoffs. They acquired forward Charlie Davies from the New England Revolution in exchange for allocation money and Philadelphia’s first round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. They also traded away Sebastian Le Toux to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for general allocation money, and signed U.S Men’s National Team midfielder Alejandro Bedoya to his first MLS contract. The Union are hoping this will strengthen their offense and give them a more balanced squad moving forward.
In order to make room for the arrival of Le Toux, the Colorado Rapids traded away Luis Solignac to the Chicago Fire in exchange for general allocation money. Solignac had scored three goals and earned four assists in 33 appearances for the Rapids. Chicago is looking for Solignac to help increase their attacking game.
New England remained rather quiet during this transfer window, trading away Charlie Davies to the Union for general allocation money, targeted allocation money, and the Union’s first round pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft.
The Montreal Impact have made a number of important moves, the most recent one being the signing of Hernan Bernardello. Bernardello played in Montreal starting in 2013, but parted with the club in 2014 after failing to agree to new terms for his contract. After bouncing around different clubs in Mexico, Spain, and Argentina, Bernardello is back with the Impact. In the month of July, the Impact also traded Amadou Dia for Cameron Porter and received Matteo Mancosu on loan from Bologna.
