Here are five storylines to watch for Saturday's match in Miami:
Ellis Opens Accounts
Justin Ellis reached a milestone by scoring his first MLS goal in Saturday’s match against D.C. United, finishing a rebound off a Griffin Dorsey header. Making just his second first-team start, the 18-year-old Homegrown forward continues to impress with his composure on the ball and growing role in the Lions’ attack. A product of the Orlando City Academy and Orlando City B pathway, Ellis has shown maturity at the senior level. He added to his strong week with a goal and an assist in Wednesday’s U.S. Open Cup match and previously recorded his first MLS goal contribution with an assist on a Martín Ojeda goal against Charlotte FC on April 22. Still building momentum after making his First Team debut last season, Ellis has joined Luís Otávio, Ignacio Gómez, Iago and Tiago as Lions to score their first MLS goals this year.
Keeping Florida Purple
Orlando City holds a 7W-7L-5D all-time record against Inter Miami across all competitions, highlighting the narrow margins that have defined the Florida Derby since 2020. Captain Robin Jansson leads all active Orlando City players in the rivalry with 15 career appearances, providing a steady presence in the Lions back line across multiple editions of the fixture.
Spicer Strikes in D.C.
Forward Tyrese Spicer scored his first MLS goal of the 2026 season in the 67th minute of Saturday’s match against D.C. United, his second of the year across all competitions. Robin Jansson started the sequence before Adrián Marin delivered the primary assist, his first of the season, playing Spicer into space behind the defense. Spicer drove into the box, drew the goalkeeper off his line and finished low into the bottom right corner. Spicer continued his strong run of form Wednesday, adding an assist in Orlando City’s U.S. Open Cup match to cap a productive week in all competitions.
Offensive Awakening
Orlando City’s attack has surged over the past week and a half, with the Lions scoring 10 goals over their last three matches, their most prolific stretch since posting 12 across three games last August against Atlas, Necaxa and Inter Miami. Eight different players have found the net during the run, led by Justin Ellis and Martín Ojeda with two goals apiece, while Luís Otávio, Ignacio Gómez, Tyrese Spicer, Iago, Griffin Dorsey and Zakaria Taifi have each scored once. Six of the 10 goals marked a first for the player in question at Orlando City, underscoring the depth and balance driving the Lions’ recent offensive form.
Late Cup Drama
Orlando City delivered one of its most thrilling performances of the season Wednesday night, outlasting the New England Revolution 4-3 to advance to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals. The Lions rallied from behind three separate times and took the lead for the first time on Zakaria Taifi’s stoppage-time winner in the second minute of stoppage time. Orlando trailed 0-1, 1-2 and 2-3 before completing the comeback, marking the first time in club history the Lions overcame three deficits in a single match to secure a victory. The win sends Orlando City into the quarterfinals, where it will host rivals Atlanta United FC at Inter&Co Stadium.
Milestone Tracker:
-Duncan McGuire’s next goal will be his 32nd for Orlando City in all competitions, passing former captain Nani for fourth all-time
-Martín Ojeda is three goals away from 40 in all competitions for Orlando City. Ojeda would become the third player in club history to score 40 goals, following Facundo Torres (47) and Cyle Larin (44), and the first with both 40 goals and 40 assists.
