Match Report: Orlando City B drops 2-1 decision to Carolina Core FC

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (July 7, 2024) – Orlando City B (4-5-6, 21 points) fell 2-1 on Sunday night against Carolina Core FC (3-7-3, 16 points) at Osceola County Stadium. Midfielder Shak Mohammed was the lone goal scorer for the Lions on the night, extending his team lead with his seventh goal of the season.

The young Lions went into halftime with the 1-0 lead but were unable to take advantage in the second half. Carolina Core drew a foul inside the OCB box and Ibrahim Covi punched in the ensuing penalty kick for the equalizer. Just a few minutes later, Carolina Core struck again on a quick counterattack from Joshua Rodríguez for the game-winning goal.

The Lions’ next match will be on Sunday, July 14 when they welcome intrastate foes Inter Miami CF II to Osceola County Stadium. That match will kick off at 7 p.m. ET on MLS League Pass on Apple TV.

Just moments before the end of the first half, the Lions were able to build up an attack to take the lead going into halftime. Yeiler Valencia took control on the left side of the Carolina defensive zone and crossed the ball into the box. Carolina Core goalkeeper Alex Sutton was able to get a hand on the ball, but it was deflected towards the goal line, where Shak Mohammed took advantage and tapped in the shot for an early Orlando advantage.

60’ Ibrahim Covi (Penalty Kick) – ORL 1, CCFC 1
The Foxes got their equalizer coming off an Ibrahim Covi penalty kick. In a chaotic moment in front of the Orlando City B goal, Carolina Core forward Joshua Rodríguez drew a foul. Covi would step up to take the ensuing penalty kick and send his shot up into the roof of the goal to make the game level at 1-1.

Just seven minutes later, Carolina Core took its first lead of the night on a deep-starting counterattack. The Lions were threatening inside the Carolina box, but a would-be cross was intercepted. The defense sent off a clearance towards midfield where Rodríguez was able to turn the last defender in the midfield and break away before chipping in a long shot past goalkeeper Carlos Mercado.
