Lewis Neal Shines in Unfamiliar Role

Lewis Neal Shines

With Orlando City star Kaká out due to injury during last weekend’s game against Sporting Kansas City, Coach Adrian Heath had to find a way to replace the Brazilian Superstar. With no other central attacking midfielder available for selection, Coach Heath inserted utility player, Lewis Neal. According to Coach Heath, that decision paid off immensely.

“I thought Lewis was arguably our best player of the weekend. Sometimes people only look at what people do when they get the ball, however he made so many positional changes during the game that made it difficult for them to pick our midfield players up,” explained Heath.

“He is just a very good footballer. He understands the game; you could put him anywhere on the field and he will get and understand the role. I envy watching him on the pitch.”

Since arriving to Orlando as an MLS Expansion Draft pick, Neal has become one of Orlando City’s most versatile players. The English midfielder played as a left, right, central, and defensive midfielder so far this season, which is a task many soccer players around the world would find very difficult.

“I certainly felt a little bit of pressure,” stated Neal. “It is not an easy task stepping into Kaka’s role…I tried to do my best for the team, and hopefully I helped the team in general.”

Neal’s strong play at attacking midfielder was essential in leading the Lions to three points against Sporting Kansas City. With five games left in Orlando City’s regular season, having the versatility and football IQ that Neal possesses could play instrumental in the final playoff push.
