Melbourne Victory 2, Newcastle Jets 1 (recap / highlights)
A week after the season began, Pride midfielder Emily van Egmond got her first chance to hit the field with the Newcastle Jets but saw their W-League opener spoiled by Melbourne Victory. Victory opened the scoring in style when Melina Ayres blasted a distance shot in after receiving a pass from Dani Weatherholt. Natasha Dowie doubled the home side’s lead before Cortnee Vine pulled one back for the Jets. Weatherholt, van Egmond and Christine Nairn played all 90 minutes for their teams.
Melbourne City 3, Sydney FC 1 (recap / highlights)
Seattle Reign forward Jasmyne Spencer took things upon herself, recording the first hat-trick in Melbourne City history as the defending champions beat Sydney FC 3-1. Sydney were again without the services of Alanna Kennedy, but were able to break Lydia William’s bid for a shutout in the 21st minute on an Amy Sayer goal.
Brisbane Roar 1, Western Sydney 0 (recap / highlights)
Defender Carson Pickett kept her hot streak going, scoring her second goal in as many games to lead Brisbane to a 1-0 win over Western Sydney on the road. In the 39th minute, Pickett drove a low free kick around the Wanderers’ two-person wall to net the lone goal of the match. Chioma Ubogagu earned her second straight start, playing all 90 minutes before departing to join the England national team.
Canberra United 4, Perth Glory 4 (recap / highlights)
Perth Glory completed a comeback for the ages this weekend, rallying from a three-goal deficit in the final eight minutes to tie the game 4-4. After opening the game with an early own-goal to put Perth up 1-0, Canberra rattled off four straight goals to take a commanding lead.
