Canberra United 3, Sydney FC 2 (recap / highlights)
It was a barnburner at McKellar Park as Canberra United fell behind twice, overcoming the difference and eventually stealing a late-winner for a 3-2 victory. Down 2-1 in the 78th minute, Toni Pressley scored her first W-League goal, knocking it in on a corner kick to draw her team level late. That goal setup Michelle Heyman’s second goal of the match, an 85th-minute game winner, giving United all three points.
Sydney scored both of their goals from the spot, the first after Lisa DeVanna drew a penalty against her former Orlando teammate, Pressley.
Melbourne City FC 5, Newcastle Jets 2 (recap / highlights)
Down 2-1 after two goals in four minutes by Katie Stengel (Boston Breakers), Steph Catley took matters into her own hands and setup back-to-back City goals, including a waist-high 54th-minute volley goal from Jessica Fishlock (Seattle Reign FC). Larissa Crummer (Seattle Reign FC) scored a goal on both sides of the half, with Kyah Simon scoring the game’s opening goal and Fishlock adding another golazo late in the match. Alanna Kennedy earned her third-straight start and played all 90 minutes.
Adelaide United 3, Perth Glory 1 (recap / highlights)
Makenzy Doniak (North Carolina Courage) led Adelaide to its first win of the season, picking up her first professional hat trick en route to a 3-1 win. Coming into the match with five goals in her first two games, Rachel Hill didn’t get credit in the box score but her play resulted in Perth’s lone goal. In the 50th minute, Hill sent a low cross into the box that was misplayed and booted in for an own goal by Adelaide captain Emma Checker.
Despite the loss, Perth remains atop the league standings after three matches.

Monica made her highly-anticipated Atlético Madrid debut this weekend, earning the start and featuring all 90 minutes as her side went on to shutout UDG Tenerife, 2-0. Madrid took the lead in the 19th minute, when Esther redirected a set piece from former WNY Flash midfielder Soni Bermudez. Atlético went up by two goals after former Orlando Pride amateur player and USF graduate Jackie Simpson scored an own goal.

Three Good Things
- Pressley Pokes it Home: We saw this year what Pressley’s left foot can do from distance (ICYMI), but it was great to see the center back knock home a scrambler this weekend. The goal couldn’t have come at a better time, either, bringing her team back level and paving the way for the go-ahead goal.
- Alex Keeps it Rolling: The U.S. Women’s National Team played Canada twice this past week, drawing 1-1 on Thursday before downing its North American rival 3-1 on Sunday. Despite varying result, one thing remained consistent: Alex Morgan’s nose for the goal. Morgan made it seven goals over the last seven games, scoring the lone goal on Thursday before adding the game winner (and an assist on Carli Lloyd’s insurance goal) on Sunday. Paired with nine goals for Orlando in 2017, Morgan’s current run of form is, perhaps, a career best.
