Things To Do
Mount Royal
This is probably the best place to start of your trip. Itās a beautiful walk (or bus ride, if youāre lazy), itās entirely free of charge, and the Belvedere observatory offers amazing views of downtown Montreal and the mountains over on the south bank. Great selfie spot, too.
Basilica Notre-Dame
Iām not one to recommend visiting religious buildings unless itās absolutely necessary- and in this case, it is. The Notre-Dame Basilica is one of the finest of its king, with one of the most ornate gothic facades in the world, and a strikingly beautiful chapel at the back. This is where youāll find the impressive organ everyone talks about. Also, itās where Celine Dion got married. #fancy
Montreal Insectarium
The Montreal Insectarium in the largest ābug museumā in North American and one of the largest in the world, featuring live scarabs, tarantulas and scorpions. Donāt be sluggish and pay the museum a visit.
Bars and Restaurants
Sucrerie De La Montage
This āsugar shackā just west of downtown Montreal is where all of your lumberjack breakfast dreams come true. The all-you-can-eat feast is an endless spread of eggs, sausage, ham, mashed potatoes, meatballs, meat pie, beans, and thick, crispy bacon. You can top it all off with maple syrup, which was made just outside the front door, and wash it all down with ā you guessed it ā boozy maple syrup drinks (wine, sangria, whiskey). The grand finale is the Tire A La Neige, where you essentially eat fresh maple taffy off a slab of snow with a tiny wooden stick.
Terrasse Sur LāAuberge
One of the most stunning views in the city is quietly on top of a nondescript hotel right by the boardwalk of Old Montreal. Duck into a hidden entryway, take a rickety elevator up to the fifth floor, and then follow the sound of laughter and clinking glasses to discover a breathtaking vista of the Old Port. Fair warning: the sangria pitchers here are killer.
Frite Alors
There are 8 style of poutine to choose from at this fry-house, including a hearty sucker topped with steak, āshrooms and fried onions. The thing that really makes it, however, is their selection of 17 different sauces to dip the fries in. And in case you were wondering, those fries are trans-fat free! Phew!
