We’re coming up on Week Seven in the Westfield W-League, and Melbourne City FC are still sitting at the top of the table. But there are other squads right behind them, including Canberra United. With many Pride players on loan to the W-League for the NWSL offseason, here is a recap of all their team’s latest action:
Adelaide United
In Week Five Adelaide United, home to Brazilian Pride defender Monica Hickmann Alves, faced off against Jasmyne Spencer’s Canberra United. The match ended in a 2-2 draw with goals by Raso and Brush for Canberra United, and Quigley and Brewer for Adelaide United. The next week they faced Maddy Evans’ Brisbane Roar FC. It was a high scoring match, but in the end Brisbane Roar managed a 3-2 victory. Brisbane scored two goals in the first half and tacked on a third at the start of the second half-- Adelaide started to mount a comeback, but in the end it wasn’t enough. Adelaide United currently sit at the eighth slot in the table with only two points, and are still looking for their first win. They faced Perth Glory FC on Friday, December 16th at 7:30pm local time.
Canberra United
In Week Five, Canberra United faced off against Adelaide United and played to a 2-2 draw, as noted above. In Week Six, Canberra United faced off against Melbourne City FC and handed them their first loss of the season. The match remained scoreless in the first half, and Canberra opened up scoring at the start of the second with a goal from McCormick in the 49th minute. Melbourne City countered quickly with a goal by Goebel in the 53rd minute. The goal remained tied until the 83rd minute, when Canberra found a goal from Roestbakken to win them the match. Canberra will face off against Brisbane Roar FC on Sunday, December 18th at 2:30pm local time. They sit at third place in the league, just two points behind Melbourne City FC.
Brisbane Roar FC
In Week Five, Brisbane Roar FC played Melbourne City FC. Brisbane went ahead early with a goal from Gorry in the 2nd minute, but Melbourne City came back quickly with a goal by Fishlock in the 6th minute and a goal from Tymrak in the 25th minute. In Week Six, Brisbane Roar faced off against Adelaide United and won 3-2, as noted above. Brisbane Roar will face off against Canberra United on Sunday, December 18th at 2:30pm local time. They are in fifth place in the league, tied with Canberra United at 10 points.
Melbourne City FC
In Week Five, Melbourne City beat the Brisbane Roar 2-1, after two early goals left Melbourne ahead. In Week Six, Melbourne City were handed their first loss of the season against Canberra United, who managed a 3-2 victory, as noted above. Melbourne City will play the Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, December 18th at 3:00pm. They currently sit at the top of the table.
